This is a review of the novel version. This is one of the best portrayals of the Doctor and the Master. The best novels tell the story through characterization and dialogue. You can clearly see the author's enthusiasm for the 3rd Doctor. The supporting characters are done well and add to the story. The best part is the interaction between the Doctor and the Master as they are forced to work together. Overall, a well told and intelligent story that bring out the best of the 3rd Doctor era.

Mark Gatiss does a good job of capturing the spirit of the 3rd Doctor era. The supporting characters are developed well. There is a sense of mystery and suspense. The characterizations of the Doctor, Jo, Sgt. Benton, and the Brigadier are written well.

The Festival of Death is an intelligent story filled with interesting characters and situations. Jonathan Morris does a great job of capturing the characterization of the Doctor, Romana, and K9. You have to keep track of the different time loops which makes this an interesting read. Overall, a good read in the spirit of the 4th Doctor.

The King of Sontar is pretty much an action story with little depth of character. I even found the dialogue of the Doctor and Leela not very interesting. Yes, the last scene has some character development and conflict between the Doctor and Leela but other than that, I found that all of the characters didn't go beyond fighting.
