The Fourth Doctor has left Mrs. Wibbsey alone at Nest Cottage. She's hoping and praying for the return of the Doctor. Her prayers are answered except it's the Second Doctor (played by Patrick Troughton's son, David) who returns along with the newly re-commissioned Mike Yates (Richard Franklin) and members of U.N.I.T. The Second Doctor is warning of a coming alien invasion.

There's much to commend this story. First of all, it's a great chance for Sarah Jameson to shine as Mrs. Wibbsey as the Fourth Doctor doesn't return until more than half way into the story. David Troughton is fantastic in the role his father played. While Frazier Hines does a great Second Doctor impersonation in Big Finish's Audio plays, Troughton actually exceeds Frazier's talent for channeling the elder Troughton.

There's plenty of suspense and mystery at work in this story as to what's going on and the truth about this Second Doctor. Is he trying to help the aliens in their invasion? Is he really the Second Doctor or is he an importer? This is a great hour of audio entertainment. The only thing hurting it is the quite annoying character of the local Vicar whose stereotypical histrionics seem out of place in an otherwise fine story.

While the fourth doctor has left Hexford in the Tardis, Mrs Wibbsey gets a visit from Captain Yates, the second doctor and other UNIT members as they prep for an alien invasion. The series started well the first two episodes were enjoyable, the third was terrible but this part of the story gets the series back on track and then some. The interaction between Mrs Wibbsey and the second doctor are wonderful as she does trust him or his actions. Mrs Wibbsey does a lot of the narrating in this story and she does it brilliantly. Great cast, great story, highly recommend this one!

Telling this particular story from Mrs Wibbsey's point of view is a very good idea and Susan Jameson delivers a perfectly pitched narration. It quickly becomes evident that something strange is going on in Hexford and not everything is what it seems. There's a slightly off-kilter feel to the proceedings, but it isn't clear where the whole thing is leading. This helps to keep up the suspense until the end of the story and leads to a cracking cliffhanger for the last episode of Serpent Crest.
