After a less than brilliant third part, the New Adventures of Bernice Summerfield Volume 1 Box Set ends with a bang with James Goss's The Lights of Skaro. A brilliantly executed story, the Lights of Skaro is able to give a lot of time to the characters of Benny and Ace who get to have parallel storylines about what is going to happen with the Daleks and how the Doctor has interfered with their history. It uses continuity brought up to show how the crazy of Dalek history and tell a really interesting story with the biggest problem being a lack of Davros who is billed in the credits and gets only one line in a voiceover that doesn't make much sense. So yeah it definitely ends the set with a bang with a few flaws.

Gutted, totally gutted, kicked in the teeth, slapped in the face...
...paper cuts, lemon juice and so on. That is all just in the first half. No wonder Benny turns to drink.

In the second half we learn how Ace and the Doctor have been gutted by their pasts and how it all ties to daleks.

This whole series has had constant: Ace needs to be rescued. In the final story, we learn why and where and what went wrong.

This is a gut wrenching piece of human drama set against the backdrop of a world gone mad. The rub is that the madness of the world is caused by its victims. Ace, Benny and the Doctor each face their demons and learn that death, taxes and daleks are the three constants in the universe.

The whole series is highly recommended and this is the best part.
