This set just keeps getting better. The doctor stays a season of cricket and Nyssa writes a book. She has an admirer and the doctors team is getting on his nerve. It’s simple and yet quite magic and special and a strong draw on the emotions. Lovely !

Big Finish 91
Circular Time (C) Autumn
Released January 2007

Location : Stockbridge, England
Date : 21st Century

AUTUMN appears to be the first Big Finish story in which The Doctor visits Stockbridge, England. He would be back several more times. The stories I recall are Castle of Fear, The Eternal Summer, Plague of the Daleks and Doctor Who and the Iron Legion. I believe this pure historical which has no sci-fi at all is the only instance of one of the Fifth Doctors companions having sex. Not with him of course. I don't think we need to go there again as all of that would be a good ways away. But yeah, Nyssa gets laid. How cool is that? And what man in his right mind wouldn't want to play a game of hide the sonic screwdriver with Nyssa anyway? She was HOT in the 1980's and that era just so happened to be when I was a teenager. So yeah, I'm a little jealous of Mr. Whitaker of Stockbridge.

But on a more serious note this is indeed a beautiful story once again making Circular Time a now dozen year old gem. You don't have to love #5 or Nyssa to love this story and it does such a fine job of building their characters I just can not imagine what it would have been like to have development of these two done this quite well, before the 1980's TV episodes. TV never got this deep into their characters but it is better late than never.

Totally outstanding acting just as with the previous two in this four story set. Leaves me looking forward to Winter.

There's no Science Fiction, nor is the story a historical. The Doctor and Nyssa arrive in Stockridge so the Doctor can help the local cricket team with a late-season addition, while Nyssa has the urge to write a novel about Stockridge. Nyssa falls in love, while the Doctor finds himself clashing with the rest of the Cricket team. These are simple conflicts but told beautifully. Sarah Sutton is given some of her best material as Nyssa as the story explores her finding love and exploring options she'd never considered before. The highlight of the release.

This story is just perfect. I hardly even want to talk about it. There's really not much to say. It's just perfect. I treasure stories that give us a glimpse of the time traveling life that goes beyond the usual heroic sci-fi adventure format. In my mind, this is the sort of the thing the Doctor and his friends do most of the time, while their adventures are just frequent diversions.

I don't think any story has better captured the relationship between the Doctor and Nyssa.
