This is one of Marc Platt's best stories for Big Finish as the Doctor, Liv, and Helen arrive in 1906 in San Francisco just before the quake with the Doctor stumbling off mysteriously and an old cowboy shouting warnings of judgment and a theater owner being offered unimaginable riches.

This is a wonderfully rich script with some very well-drawn characters, and a great sense of authenticity. The story is very neatly researched. The mystery of the gift and its threat really draws the listener in. McGann is a delight to listen to and this is one of his most engaged performances as really gets into this. It's a great set up for the finale.

We follow Emma Cunniffe (Caleera) to the early part of the twentieth century, as she as infiltrated the people of San Francisco. The Doctor landing in the city soon succumbs to a strange mental aberration mainly due to the amount of psychic power that Caleera as been dishing out, it is quite a simple plot in that combined with the Earthquake that is to befall the city, couple this with her immense psychic power then the Earth could potentially be destroyed. The Doctor is the only hope, of stopping this. Well this is a nice good old fashioned story one that does not require an intense almost dedicated 100% attention spanning 1hour of listening, which I can tell you can be dangerous when you are driving and trying to pay attention to what is going on around you. However, the story is well written and balanced, and to some extent take us back in to the Big Finish territory that actually allows the soundscape and the acting to do the work. McGann is excellent in this in fact out of the three stories this stands out by far as the best of the bunch. I also like the way that the companions Helen and Liv are really coming together as a team now they are working very well indeed. There is some cracking "good old American" gold rush stuff going on here which added to the overall theme, and assists the story development to the point of it really making me fell I am part of the panic as the city succumbs to the quake, later on in the story. So hats off to the sound design here, and also James Jordan (Charles Virgil McLean), Paul Marc Davis (Pepé Gonzalez), Cory English (Sam Sonora), Laura Harding (Ethel Halliday/Mariam), Enzo Squillino Jnr (Aldo Deluca), they really add to the overall story. A great pickup from the last more intense hard going story intensive outing.
