This episode is rather derivative not just from vampire stories which one would expect but also from other Doctor Who stories. The 8th Doctor Audio Adventure 'The Stones of Venice' from the Monthly Big Finish Series has a lot of its ideas lifted for this, seemingly with no acknowledgement that this has been done. In addition there is a scene where the Doctor climbs a tower in a storm which seems rather copied from the 10th Doctor story Evolution of the Daleks. So there is nothing inventive in this episode and it is quite insulting to not at least credit Stones of Venice as the source for this story's ideas. They have simply introduced vampires and mixed up things from that earlier audio story. If this was done much better than that weak audio story with clever, exciting additions then I would have enjoyed it I am sure but in fact it is not much of an improvement at all. This story is flat, muddled, a bit silly and uninteresting. It also has a very unimpressive climax.

This is not awful television but for a Doctor Who episode it is disappointing. 6/10

I for one really enjoy this serial as it’s just lots of fun and looks very pretty minus the storm. I also think it’s one of Murray Gomds most underrated score.

Mediocre plot, but visually striking and with great energy. I loved it for just being jolly doctor who!

An atmospheric period piece ruined by a trite revelation.
