A great setting for Doctor Who as the Doctor and Amy travel back to medieval Japan and find themselves in a mystery involving the local shrine of the jade pyramid. The story has an interesting conclusion and at least two guest characters who are interesting. Taken together with a good performance from Matt Smith and this is definitely a worthwhile listen.

I always find it interesting to see the Doctor and his companions arrive in a time or place in Earth history that isn't really visited all that regularly in the series. So the setting of medieval Japan was immediately intriguing to me and it is brought to life quite nicely in this tale. The adventure itself may not be the most innovative Doctor Who story ever, but it is perfectly enjoyable none the less, with great characterizations of both the Doctor and Amy. Plus there is a bit of a twist ending, so not everything is as straight forward as it seems at first.
There are a few scenes where Matt Smith' reading is a little too pacy for my liking, but for the most part his delivery is very engaging and he does an excellent job of making all the characters easily distinguishable.
Some of the 11th Doctor original audiobook releases are a bit hit and miss, but The Jade Pyramid is one I think is actually rather enjoyable and well-done. Recommended.

I like Matt Smith's "Amy Pond" voice. He certainly carries these books well. The story is fun for the first half hour, gets quite moving in the middle after a ninja appears, then slips nicely into a 'here's my theory, but we'll probably never know' ending. Ah well. I'd like a cliffhanger half way through with a theme tune to break it up, but that's only because my concentration can't cope with one voice for an hour.
