The Seventh Doctor and Bernice Summerfield land on a planet that celebrates Christmas just right with snow, carolers, and shopping aplenty. But it all goes horribly wrong when a strange virus that’s been chasing the Doctor through time and space infects the people and turns them into a stammering lynch mob. It’s a story that plays with the fear of murderous zombie-like villagers as well as the space between words that feels reminiscent of my favorite Seven story “The Word Lord”. It’s such a small and simple thing that you’d never normally think about but James Goss’ script is very clever in turning it into something rather terrifying making simple “ummmmm....”s the calling card of infection. But this one also takes a good look at the relationship between the Doctor and Benny and how they play off each other. It forces the pair to really trust each other and the actions that Bernice is forced into in order to save her friend is simply tragic even if it is all wrapped up and negated pretty quickly before the end. Lisa Bowerman is a great narrator and voice actor, the soundscape is decent, and its length is perfect for a quick listen in between all of the festivities of the holidays. It’s not quite as strong narratively as others on the list and I wish the ending was a tad stronger. But for all it does right in giving us a great Christmas plot, a clever and terrifying force to be reckoned with, and a great Doctor/companion relationship to explore, “The Hesitation Deviation” is a great little story that will leave Seventh Doctor fans very happy.

The story open with Bennie visiting a robot psychologist and asking him to erase all the memories of the Doctor and then she tells the robot a story about her and the Doctor. The Doctor and Bennie arrive on a world where everyone is nice and Christmas is celebrated like nowhere else in the cosmos. Then everyone decides to kill them...which ultimately to Bennie’s dramatic decision. This is a well-written and brilliantly acted piece that highlights the Doctor’s relationship with Bennie. Similar plots have been done by Big Finish before, but this one is well-executed and very fun.
