Massively disappointing telling of the Doctors first meeting with the Sontarans who here seems ridiculously out of character. With the exception of Dan Starkey and Purves (as Steven, less said about his Doctor the better) the voice cast were woeful.
Total snoozefest

If you're looking for a good Sontaran attack story this will work well. It's got an interesting location, a great escalating plot, and quite a few thrilling bits to keep you entertained. But this story is more than that. It's about Sara Kingdom.

I'm thoroughly impressed by what Big Finish has managed to do with the Feast of Steven gap in the middle of The Daleks' Master Plan. Sara was a throwaway character with an inexplicable personality shift and these audio stories have answered why she softened while simultaneously fleshing her out from a 2 dimensional caricature into a fully developed young woman. Her interactions in this story with Steven, The Doctor, and her fellow SSS officers do an excellent job of adding to her story. You don't need to be familiar with her TV appearance to appreciate this story but it will help a lot and you will probably enjoy both more as a result.

Whether you are in it for the Sontaran gunfights, spelunking into an active volcano, exploring a mysterious lost civilization, for more Sara, or anything else this story offers you will be entertained.

The Sontarans captures the Doctor's first meeting with one of his most popular monsters as he, Steven, and Sara have a quick base under siege bit with a team of Earth Security forces trying to take out a space cannon that threatens to destroy retreating human colonists, team up with them against the Sontarans to ensure the cannon is destroyed, and history remains on course.

The story is a very enjoyable military raid tale. It feels exactly how the Sontarans would have been introduced in the 1960s. The acting is solid and conveys believable emotions, and the guest actors take on a large number of roles and manage to keep them all distinct. I liked the idea of the Companions knowing more about an alien threat than the Doctor does for once.

Overall, a very solid conclusion to a great season of Early Adventures.
