River Song and the Eighth Doctor meet for the first time in this story... and what a meeting it is! "The Rulers of the Universe" sees the two take on the titular villains, as well as the Sanukuma, a strange power from the dawn of time which are brought to life brilliantly by the writer and sound designers on this story. Imogen Stubbs and Alex Vlahos are fabulous as Isabella and Bertie, and really give Alex Kingston performances to play off. I'd certainly love to hear more from these two characters!

The Eighth Doctor and River have amazing chemistry as well, and they don't even properly meet! It would be great to have a follow-up to this story because, although this ties up the boxset neatly, the performances of the four main characters are just so good!

Thoroughly recommended.

This final entry really pulls together the entire storyline extremely well. Toss in the 8th Doctor and mix well with some River Song and you have a recipe for success.

The entire box set pays off in grand fashion as River takes her revenge on the Rulers of the Universe and ends up teamed with the Eighth Doctor for the fate of a galaxy.

"Rulers of the Universe" really has fun with River using her Vortex manipulator for some over the top time travel action. She's not the heartless killer she was raised to be, but neither does she have the Doctor's morality which is shown in how she breaks up the party

The Doctor is kept on his own separate plot as he's pressed into taking control of the spore ships in the previous tale. This story features the oldest audio version of the Eighth Doctor, as the Time War has already started. The Doctor isn't actively taking part but he's not been above borrowing a few devices from it.

Only at the end, are the Doctor and the River Song working together, how she must not reveal herself to this Doctor as per the rules she's agreed to.

Overall, this is a wonderful epic high stakes story to close the box set on. And despite a rocky start, the Diary of River Song is still an enjoyable set. In many ways, it's the mirror image of the first Doom Coalition set which began well but faltered. Diary begins weak but finishes strong.

It does leave the listener with a lot of questions such as how River will manage to feature prominently in Doom Coalition 2 without revealing herself to the Doctor, but that only adds to the anticipation for that release.

The presence of Paul McGann immediately elevates this and shows Alex Kingston how it is done.

Over all though The Diary of River Song has been a real hard slog to listen to and there is no chance that I will get Vol.2
