The Death Collectors introduces the Dar traders, an alien race who exists near the point of death and who literally trade in death. Overall, they're one of the more interesting species introduced in Big Finish as while they are scary and can be a bit dangerous if they're caught at the wrong time, they're not evil and also possess a great deal of wisdom.

The plot his a solid mystery at the core and the three part format serves the story well as the story moves along at a very good clip. At the same time, the story has some thought provoking moments as it explores ethics and what should be done to prevent death. Katherine Parkinson turns in a good performance as Danika and the surprise ending after the Doctor leaves is a nice twist.

This l listened to more than once, in fact l listened to this about three or four times, and each time a new layer lifted the material and the audio production to a new level. Stewart Shergold as excelled here in producing a very high quality peace of science fiction drama. For once I can also say that Sylvester is working above par with what essentially a tiny 4 actor ensemble. Katherine Parkinson dulcet tones are a real lift on the ears and she portrays her character as hollow, empty, worn out individual desperate for some peace and quiet. Sylvester plays an even more manic character than normal with a real high anxiety and drive, that he sometimes does not have with a companion, in this adventure there is no companion. Although the offer made to Katherine towards the end, is sadly turned down, as I think she would have made a superb assistant to the old Doctor. The main stay of the story is corruption and misplaced ideology, that death is merely a state, a state that can be overcome, through science and the assistance of the Dar Traders, who, are essentially creatures who survive by inhabiting the temporal element of the cusp of life and death, Professor Mors, tries to extract and solve the oldest riddle of time, how to cheat death.

This is probably the changing drama for me, that, actually shows off Sylvester as the quality actor and the Doctor Who which I personally think he never quite managed on T.V. Listen, re-listen and enjoy.

This audio made for a very engaging listen - an immediately gripping story that was generally fast-paced, with lots of action and a sense of genuine peril for certain characters, all within a convincing aural environment. I thought the acting was excellent throughout, and Danika was an especially well-realized and well-enacted character - I was disappointed when she turned down the offer to join the Doctor as a companion as I'd love to hear more of her with this Doctor, or other Doctors. I originally gave this an 8, but I'm going to revise up to a 9 - I really enjoyed this story.

I find the accents of the Death Collectors very hard to listen to. We get it, they are aliens and there are only so many sound effects you can distort a voice to on radio. BUt sometimes, we just need to hear the words...
