As somebody who likes - but doesn't love - the Paternoster Gang, I thought this was quite an enjoyable story. The Doctor doesn't feature in this adventure, but he really isn't missed, because Vastra, Jenny and Strax manage to deal with the situation perfectly well and very engagingly on their own. Some of the jokes, like Strax's constant difficulty in telling apart men and women, are starting to wear a bit thin. And the story seems to be aimed at a slightly younger audience, which means the murder investigation isn't quite as action packed as anticipated. However, on the whole The Devil in the Smoke is doing a good job of showcasing the potential of this investigative trio.
Dan Starkey is a wonderful narrator, who manages to switch seemingly effortlessly between various voices and accents. From his own character Strax to the silky tones of the main villain he gives everybody a distinctive voice.
The Devil in the Smoke offers a diverting and rather nicely done excursion to the Victorian London of Paternoster Row. A solid entry in the BBC audiobooks range.

This is a more juvenile novella, enjoyed the narration. A nice light read. Goes well with the feel of the later 11th Doctor episode 'The Crimson Horror'.
