Spoilers ...

Josette is really given some punishment as she takes what appears to be her final journey. In this occasionally pretty graphic story, her guide initially appears to despise her, yet as the story continues, the reasons for The Guide's hatred becomes clearer, and she begins to soften towards Ms Du Pres Collins. For all their great differences, there is a delicate kinship there, and we can only hope they both find a kind of retribution at the story's close.
Rebecca Staab does a terrific job of conveying guide Emily's wearied resentment both of Josette, and of life in general. She is detached for the most part, only with the events leading up to the finale betraying the flood of emotion beneath - I hope we hear more from her in this series. Her early coldness is a great contrast to the warmer, typically wonderful
Kathryn Leigh Scott.
I speak of a finale, which is a very open-ended affair, just as they often are in these readings, leading onto other strands of the ongoing Dark Shadows story - some of which I'm becoming familiar with, some of which I am not as yet. It all adds to the rich tapestry and multi-layered brilliance of this series, and every entry into it. A darker and initially bleaker story than we usually get, this is another fine entry into DS mythos!
