Junior Doctor Who and the Giant Robot was based on the original television serial Robot which was shown from 28 December 1974. It was written by Terrance Dicks.

This was one of two "junior" novelisations written by Dicks, which were essentially rewrites of previously published novelisations in this case, Dicks' own Doctor Who and the Giant Robot but aimed at younger readers. Only one other book of this type was attempted: Junior Doctor Who and the Brain of Morbius.
