The Morton Legacy
London

The Morton Legacy was the first time I listened to a second Doctor Companion Chronicle type story and it was so enjoyable that it made me feel as if I were watching classic 1960's TV. It opened my eyes as to what else by Big Finish could be enjoyed. I had only been under the false impression that full cast audio dramas of my favorites like Doctors 4 & 5 would be to my liking. This not only proved me wrong but added to my appreciation of the Companion Chronicles.

The TARDIS arrives in London about 100 years earlier than intended and The Doctor, Polly, Jamie and Ben take to the streets. The TARDIS is stolen in short order and they set out to locate it. It has been absconded into the collection of Mr. Morton and while investigating it's whereabouts they learn that Mr. Morton is a murder suspect involved in a lawsuit where the people opposing him keep ending up found dead.

Big Finish later classified this story as an "Early Adventure" due to it's full cast and it caused me to find myself on eBay, Amazon and Bookdepository looking for more like this as I enjoyed it so much. It felt as if it were authentic 1960's Who with a better than average story and set of episodes I had never seen before. The story felt very genuine to the locations and it was a fine mystery adventure no doubt.

The Doctor, Ben, Jamie, and Polly connect with Mister Morton, the owner of a museum in London after he seizes the TARDIS for 30 minutes. They discover the museum owner is involved in a lawsuit. However, he begins to get lucky and the police get suspicious when key parties in the lawsuit start dying and police suspicion turns on Morton, but there may be something from the museum causing it.

This is a tough story to evaluate. It's not your typical Second Doctor story and it's chief virtue is that it's not predictable and doesn't end where you'd think. It does a great job subverting your expectations. However, that done, what it delivers isn't bad but it also isn't great. The guest characters are okay, but not particularly memorable. So overall, it's a decent story that's very well plotted.
