Eddie Robson who wrote the first sixth doctor and Charley story returns with another story that's different from but just as good or better than the original. The Doctor is looking for a woman who is passing Pound coins minted in 2012 in the year 2009 and enlists the help of DI Patricia Menzies. Menzies and Charley go to visit an alien who is sensitive to time travelers. However, he's also very sensitive to Charley's state as a paradox. When Menzies returns to find the man dead, she suspects Charley of murder.

From there, the story takes several great turns. Of course, the highlight of the story is all the characters finding themselves on board a gambling ship where people cannot only gamble away their money but also intangible things such as youth or knowledge. Again, this is a lot of fun and very clever stuff.

The script is helped by a solid cast, most notably Anna Hope as DI Menzies who is even better than she was in Condemned. Also, the relationship between the Doctor and Charley is moving towards a head. Her efforts to hide her past with the Eighth Doctor are becoming harder to sustain, and the Doctor is beginning to trust her, particularly with a wager tries to make on the boat. It's all interesting stuff and it must have been frustrating for the original listeners when it was put off for several months.

I don't understand why some people have marked this as low as it has been. This in my opinion is a bit of a master peace. It is quite simply a humungous story that plays out. It has a wonderful pace, and, the acting is faultless. Colin and India excel in every area. With Colin still confused about Charlie's beguiling understanding of the situation, Charlie all to aware of her predicament in respect of her history with the Dr Even if it were No.8 not No.6. In fact one of early on in the story we hear Charlie's past being explained to the wonderful D.I. Mendez, who I hope get the shot of being a companion as her character is a comedic foil to the Doctor's more austere side, which works so well. Special mention of Anna Hope who plays D.I. Mendez should be made, she owns the part so well, and the character she has made from it, works too dam well for it to be ignored. The story is sublime. The Doctor over a promised breakfast to Charlie reads of disturbing incident in Manchester, of a £1 coin with a date in the future turning up in some ones change. Dr and Charlie are soon however, back in the realms of D.I. Mendez's patch, with a murder, escaped alien's, and a on going war between an alien race of the Tabbalac and a genetically manufactured species created and existing purely through the war mongering need of the Tabbalac. I cannot recommend this highly enough, and in fact, if it makes more sense then listen, and make your own minds up.

D.I.Menzies - awesome. The story - awesome. The continuing Charlei/6th Doctor arc - awesome. I'm not usually one for superlatives but this story has it all. Excellent work.

Huzzah! The Doctor and Charley get a real story with tension and surprises and everything! Including D.I. Menzies who we all know is gorgeous and comes with added sarcasm to attract the cynical fanboys.

This story is great, a clever build on the D.I.'s first appearance and ups the guilt stakes on the still secretive Charley. I love what it does with aliens, casinos and top trumps, mixing the lot with a dose of Manchester. In some ways it's a shame they leave the streets and tower-blocks for the science fiction, the journey makes Menzies too experienced and knowing, but the whole thing is done with such energy. And no-one loses when Michael Fenton Stevens is delivering.

Lovely.
