Without question, Counterfeit is the weakest chapter in the box. Gareth Thomas' voice does sound rather grizzled by his advancing years, but for me the big detractor is the pick'n'mix style of the narration. It's a peculiar jumble with Gareth Thomas sometimes narrating in first person as Blake, occasionally interacting with Avon, Zen or a silent Jenna or else switching to an anonymous third person perspective. It's the latter that rankles most as it breaks the cohesion of the story and could easily have been overcome by allowing all the events to have been told from Blake's perspective.
Whilst I'm pleased to see the original cast playing their roles, it is somewhat disheartening to have them work almost entirely in isolation. The scenes where Blake and Avon interact are few and far between, but they really underline that what is missing from these stories is the fractious family chemistry of the Liberator crew.
